When Pharaohs Ruled: On the Translation of Judges 5:2

   Abstract

The first two words of the Song of Deborah have posed great difficulties for translators since antiquity. After a review of the various proposals, this essay proposes a translation that solves the quandary of apparent Israelite ignorance of Egyptian domination of Palestine in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages.
