Origen's Version of Genesis 1:2

  Abstract

Chalcidius attributes to Origen an interpretation of the phrase {vav}{he}{bet}{vav} {vav}{he}{tav} in Genesis 1:2 which personifies the earth: terra autem stupida quadam erat admiratione. This can be explained by noting that Genesis Rabba on Genesis 1:2 supports a similar interpretation of {vav}{he}{bet}{vav} {vav}{he}{tav}, probably on the basis of the Aramaic roots {yod}{he}{tav} and {yod}{he}{bet}, both of which denote amazement or perplexity.
